The Great Southern Expedition :: Introduction

Introduction

In late 1955, Kath Grewar (later Turner) left Darwin to return home with her dear friends, Helen Green (later Hollolee) and Marye Helmsley (later Percival) to return to their homes down south.

The journey involved driving an Austin A40 Minor, named “Alfred”, over unmade roads down through the Northern Territory, through Queensland, and then to Sydney.

Over the course of their trip, the women (sporadically) kept a joint diary of their trip. Kath also kept her own diary of the trip.

Many years later, Kath transcribed her personal hand-written diary to an electronic document. Many years after that, and sadly after Kath had died, her son transcribed the hand-written joint-diary to an electronic book (available on the pedigree page). The electronic book is not a perfect transcription because some of the handwriting was indecipherable.

Having discovered the electronic version of Kath’s diary, her son created this website to show the two diaries in a side-by side presentation.

Presentation

Throughout this diary presentation the left column is the joint-diary, with each day shown superimposed on a scanned image of the first page of the relevant section of the diary. (This page is a scanned image of the cloth cover of the diary.)

The right column is the text that Kath transcribed from her own diary, separated into daily reports to align with the joint-diary.
