The Great Southern Expedition :: Day 22

Saturday, 10 December

Woke around 5 am but as there was a cold breeze dozed until 7 am then got up and lit the fire. Marye and I went down to the River to wash ourselves and our clothes. Helen followed sometime later. River wasn’t wonderful – too shallow and a soft muddy bottom. I sat in an old half-submerged boat to wash my hair and was continually attacked on legs and bottom by small fish!

After breakfast which I didn’t feel much lke we packed Alfred and oh! oh! I was off again! Felt swimmy and sick – had to sit down. Girls decided I should see a Doctor so I said yes and by the time I got there I had a nice old attack of Rigor (shakes). Saw local Doc still shaking and feeling ghastly – after he examined me poor man I was sick in his garden!

He said I was not fit to travel and put me into the hospital where as it turned out I was mighty glad to be. I had a raging temp which went even higher (don’t know exactly how high yet!) and I felt I would burst into flames. However, they put me on mezaphire(?) sulpha tabs and as a final effort something else to break the fever – which it did after a few hours.

My diet that day was – water!! Doc doesn’t know what was the matter so they “observed“ me taking temp and pulse every couple of hours, with a sulpha every four. Poor girls – and us with so little time to spare! They came to see me and afterwards sought out a camping spot.

Got dressed up and went to the local picture show where “No Pies or Prawns” are allowed but “Lollies and Icecreams” are! Naturally, the film was every bit as bad as might be expected. My day went uneventfully, of course, but I slept well. I am in the general ward (free!) and only one old lady with me, so I’m lucky.
