Did laundry at local laundromat and put five films in for processing. Then off to the beginning of the Great Ocean Road near P[or]t Campbell.
Land out of Cobden towards P[or]t Campbell lovely rolling hills – weather: showers. By the time we reached the coast though, old Hughie had shined on us again. Quite uncanny whenever there is something to look at, the rain stops and we get the chance to snap!
We actually deviated from the main road to P[or]t Campbell and travelled through mostly dairy farming country (very lush and green) through Timboon to Peterborough on the coast and the real beginning of the G[rea]t Ocean Road. Between Peterborough and P[or]t Campbell we stopped to see London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge.
Lunch at P[or]t Campbell – Craypot Bistro at only pub in town. Whiting, chips and salad – over-cooked!
Then the Twelve Apostles, Gibsons Steps, to Princeton. Here the road runs inland through Lower Gellibrand, Wattle Hill (nearer the coast) then back inland to Lavers Hill. From Lavers Hill we cut across country via a rather beautiful but rough stoney road through rainforest to the Gellibrand River R[oa]d and then on to Simpson and on to Cobden, again mainly sheep and cattle grazing – either beef or dairy. Then across to Cobden and back to Camperdown. Another interesting and enjoyable day.
Fairly tiring with all the sight-seeing stops. Home to spruce up and out to dinner at the Hampden Hotel. A delicious Chinese meal of Sweet and Sour Pork, Beef in Black Bean Sauce, and small Fried Rice. Much lower-key than the Commercial (our favourite) but very enjoyable.
Meal $22; drinks $5.80
